This was 17 year old Matt Finigan’s 4th start of the year at this level (1st year Junior). It was a steep learning curve in readiness for a serious tilt at the 2020 series, when we will have 4 or 5 rider teams on the start line. A quick look at previous results gave a clue to the calibre of the race, Geraint Thomas, Dowsett, Pidcock, Geohegan-Hart, and Lawless, all World Tour or heading that way.
Matt made it into the first 10-man break of the day. Attentive as usual, he’d spotted several ‘names’ including Lewis Askey who was 8th in the Junior Paris-Roubaix, 6th in the Kuurne –Brussel-Kuurne and laying 3rd in the series standings. A bit closer to home Matt had Joe Pidcock (Fensham Howes) and Issac Peatfield (Green Jersey RT) for company.
No stranger to getting in the breaks, Matt was in his element, but probably relieved to be reeled in after 12 miles out front. The race ebbed and flowed for the next 50 miles until 6 riders escaped to contest the win. Matt finished 30 seconds back in 38th place. A strong ride and a solid ‘reci’ for next year.
